I have been vegetarian for 5 years and I don't intend on changing. My doctor says that vegetarianism is completely healthy if you do it right. My question is... can someone still be a vegetarian while being pregnant without it affecting the baby's development? Can you maintain a vegetarian diet while being pregnant?
Yes, I maintain a vegetarian diet while being pregnant. I became vegetarian and 3 yrs later, I gave birth to a Baby boy weighs 3.6kg. 14 yrs later, my baby is now a active teenager and grow even taller than me now and is a vegetarian.
ABSO-FRIGGIN-LUTELY!!!!
If you know it is the BEST diet for YOUR body, why on EARTH would that be different for a baby in utero?
One thing to consider, however. Pregnancy is a time when CALCIUM is more important than usual. And a typical ovo-lacto veg diet is not necessarily the best way to get what you need properly.
The trouble is this: dairy intake actually inhibits the proper absorption of calcium. (yeah i know, sounds counter intuitive but trust me, you can google this info: truthaboutmilk.com or some such)
So giving up dairy during your pregnancy and increasing your intake of calcium rich dark green leafies like spinach, broccolli, chard, Kale, etc (and of course your prenatal vitamins!) is a WAY better way to ensure a healthy amount of calcium.
Here's the thing about pregnancy: you BABY will take all the calcium she needs from you, whether you get enough or not. that is nature's way. But YOU having a major calcium deficit for 40 weeks will rear its ugly head later in life in the form of possible osteoporosis, and the like.
A VEGAN (or at least DAIRY FREE) diet is sooooo much more healthful. Read "The CHina Study."Can you maintain a vegetarian diet while being pregnant?

Absolutely. It's better to feed your baby healthy fruits, vegetables and plant based proteins than cheeseburgers. Speak to a dietitian if you need to, but the ADA says a vegetarian diet is fine for all stages of life including pregnancy. Can you maintain a vegetarian diet while being pregnant?
Yes, of course you can. It's actually a lot healthier for the baby. And you of course.
