I am a vegetarian and was wondering if it's healthy to make my dog a vegetarian as well. Can dogs be fed a vegetarian diet?
NO.
Dogs are omnivores (NOT carnivores, as many have stated above), and therefore perfectly capable of thriving on a vegetarian or vegan diet. However, as with human diets, it needs to be well-balanced to provide all dietary need.
However, the healthiest diet for any dog is a variety of fresh meats, organ meats, and plant products. Our dog is fed a variety of fresh meat products that we purchase from a local producer, mixed with some light grains and an ever-changing variety of vegetables (and fruits as treats).
The most natural diet for any animal is also the healthiest. Can dogs be fed a vegetarian diet?
I have found it to be most beneficial to my dogs to eat raw. I feed my dog raw meat, but it has to be organic and free-range (just as they would likely find in the wild). With that I give a lot of raw vegetables, squash, romaine lettuce, carrots, bok choy (chinese cabbage), celery, and sometimes kale. The greens give chlorophyll and the raw meat bone-in is very healthy to the teeth and a good source of nutrition. I dont feed any grains or legumes because although these do not immediately kill a dog, they are common allergens to dogs and over time provide health complications especially in their older age. A dog can survive on a vegetarian diet (it wont kill him/her right away), but because their anatomy and physiology is different from ours, it is not the best diet for him/her. Many times if they are not getting the nutrition they need, they will eat another dogs feces in attempt to get the vitamins and minerals they need.
There are plenty of fortified vegan pet foods.
Just like with us,
there is no magical nutrient found only in animal products.
Same is true with animals.
Someone who purchases animal products is not a vegan,
someone who purchases byproducts of slaughter is not an ethical vegetarian,
regardless of whose mouth it ends up in.
If you can't afford fortified vegan pet food (it's expensive)
don't have animals. Can dogs be fed a vegetarian diet?
Only if the dog makes the decision for himself (as you did). Dogs are CARNIVORES (Check his teeth). Forcing a vegetarian diet on them is wrong, and unhealthy, regardless of your personal preferences (which I don't agree with, but, that's your choice). Should all the carnivorous wild animals be forced to eat vegetables? Let's start in Africa...
Yes they can, but it is not natural for them.
There are vegetarian dog foods that supply all the nutrients dogs need, and they are slightly healthier because:
Commercial dog foods are mostly corn, with some meat by-products. But usually no straight-foward meat, so they're better off veggie. DOGS ARE STILL CARNIVORES THOUGH!
If I were you I think I'd buy my dog mostly 100% real meat from a local place that treats the animals humanely. This would be expensive but I'm sure the dog would love it.
Yes. I would speak with your veterinarian though so he/she could set up a meal plan for them or you can just try to find vegetarian dog food. Also, dogs are not carnivores, few animals are in fact. Dogs are omnivores but live perfectly fine on a vegetarian diet just like humans.
This is ridiculous. Dogs are carnivores by nature, stop trying to induce your dog into a lifestyle just because it will make it similar to yours. This is absolutely outrageous!
Sure they can.
But I wouldn't suggest it. A dogs natural diet is mainly meat. Why push your human beliefs onto your dog. Let him eat the natural diet nature intended him to eat.
Dogs are carnivores. They're supposed to eat meat, so don't change the life of your dog to benefit yourself if you really love animals.
:)
Dogs, yes, but make sure you have a good diet and are being monitored by a vet.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS WITH A CAT.
dogs are naturally carnivores. there should be some meat in a dogs diet.
No. You do not need meat. Your dog does.
yes it's fine as long as you change his/her diet step by step.
