Are any religions supportive of a vegetarian diet?

Are there bible passages that support vegetarian diets or compassion toward animals?Are any religions supportive of a vegetarian diet?
Most religions are supportive of a vegetarian diet, but relatively few require it.
You can find bible passages that support anything if you look hard enough. Genesis says "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

The 7th Day Adventist Church teaches that God wants humans to be vegetarians. They believe he appeared to one of their founders and told her. They believe if you don't eat meat, you'll be taken in the rapture (they don't call it that, though). If you eat meat, you can still go to heaven, but you have to die first.

A 7th Day Adventist wrote the ADA statement that vegetarian and vegan diets are safe for all ages and lifestyles.....or something along those lines. Their university, Loma Linda, has a huge nutrition/health college where they turn out a lot of "nutritionist" who then go forth and tell everyone to be a vegetarian.

I'd suggest that taking dietary advice from the Adventist is no different than taking birth control advice from the Catholic Church.

In fact, McDonald's is putting a store into Loma Linda and local Adventists are fighting tooth and nail to keep it out. They don't want their kids exposed to burgers and fries.

ADDED: While some Buddhist don't eat meat, Buddha, himself, did not tell his followers to forgo meat. He told them not to kill anything, but he never told them to not eat meat. In fact, probably the most respected Buddhist leader in the world, the Dalai Lama eats some meat.Are any religions supportive of a vegetarian diet?
Virtually all the major eastern religions promote vegetarianism due to the influence of the jainist belief of ahimsa ie non violence found in Hinduism/Buddhism etc

As for Christianity I do not know nor care to be honest, to me Jesus was a cool guy with a good moral message but that's where it ends

@daisy
The dalai lama promotes vegetarianism as have many of the Dalai lamas of the past, the most renowned Buddhist monk of our time in the west thich hanh is a vegan and largely encourages veganism. He however comes from zen sects unlike Tibetan sect ie the one the dalai lama follows
The bible is a book written by man. Anyone that believes in the bible has a weak mind.

Life lessons, good and bad, right and wrong, morals and ethics, diet, and anything else have nothing to do with an old book written by man.Are any religions supportive of a vegetarian diet?
Christianity( http://youtu.be/Nb6dWrace38 ),Hinduism,Buddhism,Jainism.
There are religions that believe in a vegetarian diet. Buddhism, The Seventh Day Adventist. I am sure there are more.
Jesus Christ said that we should love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Our neighbors could just as easily be the cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and fish as they could be John and Joan living next door to us.
