I'm thinking about starting a vegetarian diet. Any tips, advice, anything?Vegetarian diet?
Decide whether you want to go slowly or cold turkey. Come up with a plan. If you decide to go cold turkey, consider giving away any meat you have hanging around. If you have canned fish/SPAM, or any other nonperishables, donate it to a shelter or something. Give the stuff that will go bad to a neighbor or friend. (In short, try not to waste it.)
Check out some cookbooks from the library to "test-drive" them before you buy them, or grab a vegetarian cooking magazine.
Plan on being kind of confused for a little bit until you get the hang of it.
Eat as much fresh food as possible. (In other words, stay away from prepackaged foods... it's really easy to eat crap if you're not careful.) One way to accomplish this is to cook up a big pot of something over the weekend and eat it all week. With something like beans, you can put them into soups and on salads for dinner, mash them up with dressing for lunch (use it as a dip or sandwich filling), or make them into little "burgers."
Keep tomato sauce and pasta on hand, as well as a generous supply of onions and garlic. If you will be eating dairy, grab some cheese, yogurt, and milk. (Also eggs, if you like them and want to eat them.)
Another thought... go into a restaurant and simply tell the waiter that you're a vegetarian and ask what s/he recommends. If you like what you get, ask for the recipe, or try to figure out what it's made of.
Obtain the book"Diet for a Small Planet" It will explain what foods you need to eat at the same meal to keep a balance.Vegetarian diet?
