However, I'm on a pesci vegetarian diet plus I eat other dairy and egg products, so aren't I receiving a sufficient amount of protein?I'm 16%26amp; I've just started out on a vegetarian diet, but my parents are concerned that it will stunt my growth?
You are not a vegetarian. Fish is not a fruit.
Well you aren't a vegetarian, so perhaps tell them that. But if you decide to go vegetarian and they haven't learned anything about nutrition yet, show them the statement from the American Dietetic Association:
"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes. A vegetarian diet is defined as one that does not include meat (including fowl) or seafood, or products containing those foods. This article reviews the current data related to key nutrients for vegetarians including protein, n-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, iodine, calcium, and vitamins D and B-12. A vegetarian diet can meet current recommendations for all of these nutrients." - Craig and Mangels (2009). Position of the American Dietetic Association: vegetarian diets. Protein is the least of your worries. Despite what meat-addicted people say, you do NOT need that much protein in your diet and too much is downright hazardous.
As to diet "stunting your growth" that is an old wive's tale. Your in-utero growth may be stunted by a number of nutrition-based factors, but at your age you can pretty much eat anything and survive for a few years.
You need to make sure you eat pulses at least three times a week and fruits and vegetables everyday. Have a fruit for breakfast and a vegetable/pulses for lunch and dinner. Make sure you include all vegetables, pulses, lentils and beans(kidney beans, chickpeas, black eyed peas, green peas). Since you eat hen periods(AKA Eggs) you might just be fine. You'll get enough protein on a vegan diet though.I'm 16%26amp; I've just started out on a vegetarian diet, but my parents are concerned that it will stunt my growth?
There is no such thing as "pesci vegetarian" there is a pescitarian, which is a diet that excludes all types of meat except fish. But you are not a form of vegetarian at all. Just tell them that you're sill eating fish, dairy and eggs, so there is no need to worry.
If you are a girl, you are pretty much done growing. If you are a guy, you could grow till you are 21+. Unless you have a horrible nutrient deficient diet, not eating meat won't stunt your growth.
If you're still eating fish, then I don't know why your parents would have issues. Fish is still meat, so you're not going to have any perceived deficiencies.
