What things should i buy at the store for a vegetarian diet?

im just starting to be vegetarian. i eat anything without animal flesh. what key items do i need to buy to make great meals? should i buy alot of veggies and fruits? What things should i buy at the store for a vegetarian diet?
Yes, buy a lot of veggies and fruits.

Buy more or less what you used to, just skip the meat section and check food packets.

Beware: you cant eat anything squidgy....like haribos or jelly sweets. They've got geletine which isnt vegetarian.
Vegies and tofu. Get stuff with absolutlt NO MEAT. Make sure you read the labels so you don't get food with animal fat in it.What things should i buy at the store for a vegetarian diet?
Exactly, Just buy what you used to, but instead of meat, buy vegetarian soy/protein products, beans, maybe a little extra cheese and peanut butter, although too much of those last two is a bad idea for your waistline.

If you weren't buying whole-grain breads, pastas, etc. before going veg, try to switch over to as many of those as you can. They contain a protein that combines with dairy to form the complete protein found in meat.

If you're worried about your nutrition during the switching over phase, make sure to take a multivitamin if you don't already. Some kinds are specifically labeled as vegetarian, others may not be.

I think that to make great meals, vegetarian or not, key things to have are herbs and spices. Good food becomes great food!
Fruits and vegetables are important, as are grains and a source of protein.

If you are comfortable cooking beans from scratch, there is a wide variety of beans and lentils available at most supermarkets. If not, the canned varieties are a little pricier and not quite as tasty, but still nutritious. Just make sure to rinse them with water first to remove excess salt.

Tofu is a wonderful protein source, but see what type of tofu your recipe calls for. Silken or soft tofu is useful for dips/puddings. Regular tofu is multi-purpose. Firm or extra-firm holds its shape very well while frying. If you are new to tofu, try golden tofu in a quick peanut sauce. (Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, by Deborah Madison...check out your local library!)

Nuts are another good source of protein, but make sure you don't overdo it on the sodium (salt).

If you use eggs and dairy, they are another source of protein. Be careful not to use these too much, though, as excessive eggs and dairy is not healthy.

Soy products are convenient, but watch the ingredient list. I love using ground veggie round (a substitute for lean ground beef). Add it in the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time.

For grains, use all the grains you used to purchase, and experiment with new ones! I love serving my stir fries over couscous. It takes 5 minutes to cook, after the water has boiled.

Purchase a variety of spices or sauces to add flavour to your meals. If you are new in this area, select a few that appeal to you and experiment! What things should i buy at the store for a vegetarian diet?
