What supplements and or vitamins would be good to take, now that I have began a vegetarian diet?

for medical purposes?

I have Crohn's which is an autoimmune disease, so naturally I want to stay as healthy as possible.....but many people at work keep telling me I should be adding some other suppliments to my diet as well, although no one seems to know exactly what those should be...........??What supplements and or vitamins would be good to take, now that I have began a vegetarian diet?
If you do your research and eat a healthy vegetarian diet the only thing you may be missing is vitamin B12, available only from meats, cheese, eggs, milk and tofu. B12 is required for digestion, absorption of foods, protein synthesis. Also prevents nerve damage, maintains fertility and promotes normal growth and development.

Be sure to mix protein sources to make sure you get all the essential amino acids: arginine, histidine, isoleucine, lysine, tryptophan and others - that the body cannot manufacture. You get complete proteins by combining Beans with any of these:

cheese

corn

nuts

rice

sesame seeds

seeds, other

wheat

Or by combining Brown Rice with these:

beans

cheese

nuts

sesame seeds

wheat

Learn to read the labels. There's much to be learned from them. For instance, that there is more nutrition in black and red beans than in pintos. And Amaranth grain is a powerhouse of iron. Here's a handy place to look things up on the web: http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.ht鈥?/a>

First start with a multivitimin. As a vegetarian you need to be particularly careful to get iron and B12. If you are a vegan you will need to be even more careful. As long as you have a balanced vegetarian diet then you should be able to get everything just fine, even protein which most people think they cant get as a vegetarian.

While I am here, a great vegetarian food (if you are not a vegan) is Quorn products. They are the best meat alternatives I have had and you can cook them in almost anything. Also, really healthy and lots of protein.

A B complex vitamin at the very minimum Make sure it has a good amount of B12.

I would recommend for you to eat eggs once or twice a week.

I tried to go vegetarian twice, and nearly died both times. but that was before I learned that a vegetarian diet did not provide vitamin B12 to keep one healthy.
