Should a vegetarian change her diet when she becomes pregnant? Is it safe to maintain a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?
My mother had 4 successful, healthy pregnancies as a vegetarian - and then, during the 5th, a 'clever' doctor decided that she couldn't possibly be getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet, so he ordered her to eat fish! How f**ked-up is that? Of course, we're talking about the mid-60s, so perhaps the GPs at the time were even less clued-up about nutrition than the current woeful crop of GPs are.
Basically, the answers to your questions are:
Yes, it is perfectly safe to maintain a vegetarian diet during pregnancy.
Yes, ALL women (not just vegetarians) need to increase their intake of certain nutrients during pregnancy. That doesn't mean changing from a vegetarian to a non-vegetarian diet, though.
It is okay to maintain a vegetarian diet while pregnant but you need to be sure to get enough protein in your diet and take your supplements. Is it safe to maintain a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?
yea why wouldnt it be ???
just make sure your getting all your nutrients
( =
It's safe. But you'll still need protein. Is it safe to maintain a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?
It's absolutely ok, as long as you are consulting your physician and possibly a nutritionist. There are thousands of vegetarian women that have babies every day. Just make sure you're getting enough of all the right things.
as long as you maintain a healthy balence of nutrients I don't see why not. Just make sure to get enough protein =)
Of course it is safe and NO.... there's no need for a vegetarian to change their diet because they are pregnant. Vegetarian or not, we certainly should make sure we get all the nutrition we should be getting... even when not pregnant, why wouldn't we continue to do so? Meat isn't some sort of magical vitamin that's healthier for pregnant women.
It is perfectly safe.
Hi. Yes it is safe to maintain a vegetarian diet through pregnancy. Pregnant women have nutritional requirements that should be met whether they eat meat or not. I read recently that around half of pregnant women are deficient in iron, for example-- that includes more meat eaters than vegetarians.
The American Dietetic Association stated, "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are
appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during
pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence." Their position paper on vegetarianism also has some additional notes about nutrition in pregnancy and lactating mothers. http://www.eatright.org/ada/files/veg.pd鈥?/a>
Yes, as long as you eat mainly fresh fruit and vegetables. Many people who don't become sick.
This is an interesting link about vitamin C and pregnancy, go to question 3 once you get on the site;

Of course, it is absolutely safe, and actually very healthy.
As with all pregnant women, vegetarian or not, care should be taken to ensure that your diet is balanced and that you are getting all the right nutrients and vitamins.
I was vegan right throughout my pregnancy, and had a very easy and healthy one, with a very healthy baby at the end of it :) My OBGYN had no concerns about my diet whatsoever.
I think it can be healthy. My personal piece of advice would be to get omega-3 fatty acids, which you can get from flaxseeds. These help the developing baby.
Some people take vitamins during pregnancy and make sure they get enough folic acid

there are many ways to get enough protein with protein drinks and powders, etc: as you know
I wouldn't see why not. You can still gt the same amount of protein, iron and other nutrients in every other food group.
Boost your calcium intake. Eat at least four servings of calcium-rich foods every day. Good choices are calcium-fortified tofu, bok choy, broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables, calcium-fortified soy milk and cereals.
Eat vitamin D-fortified foods if you don't get enough sun. It is difficult to get enough vitamin D from food, unless the products you eat are fortified with it. Examples of fortified foods are cereals, or if you eat dairy products, milk.
Here's some help. =)

My mom and dad have been vegans since their teens, and I'm vegan; so l'm loving proof.
of course it is dear :D Obviously you just need to eat for two now. Congrats on the pregnancy.
She'll need to eat more calories, but everyone who's pregnant needs to do that.
It's safe, but when you have your baby they may not be able to be as strict as you are until a certain age. It's all about body and brain fuction for baby.
not sure really i think it would be better if u confirm with a real doctor for safety purpose
No, it's not. You need protein.
Take vitamin supplements if you want to make that choice.
I think its safe, you can also ask your doctor just to be sure.
One of the major things is that you need to make sure you are getting enough folate and iron. Large sources of iron come from meats but you can get small amounts from nuts and dark leaves. Read up on things about foods with folate and iron in them. These help with cell multiplication which naturally help with your baby and your iron levels decrease greatly anyway when you are pregnant. These two also help with oxygen in blood circulation.
Your doctor may have already told you all of this but I hope this helps!
Good luck with the pregnancy and I hope everything goes well!
Yes, it is safe to maintain a vegetarian diet during pregnancy.
No, a vegetarian should definitely not change her diet. It is actually much more healthier than a non-vegetarian diet.
