I've always wanted to have a vegetarian
I just found out I was a diabetic and I've never been a fan of vegetables. but I'm slowly putting it into my diet.Is a vegetarian diet a good choice for a type 2 diabetic?
I refer you to an article by the Mayo Clinic which should help you determine if you truly want to become a total vegetarian. There is no doubt that changing your diet to whole natural organic foods such as fruits and vegetables will benefit your diabetic control. More importantly, eliminate all processed "foods" with lots of nasty chemicals you cannot pronounce let alone spell. Eliminate things that contain lots of added sugar and hydrogenated fatty oils. I suggest you read up on glycemic index and glycemic load to help you control carbohydrate consumption and reduce blood sugar spikes and quick drops. Good luck. There is a lot to learn, but it is your responsibility. After all, it is your life, and you are in control of minimizing your lifetime complications. Is a vegetarian diet a good choice for a type 2 diabetic?
You can but you need protein and fat in your diet as well. For fat you can use avocados, or your salad dressing might have extra virgin olive oil in it. The protein could be chicken, or tofu. To get more details you might want to talk to a dietitian. But know too that your medication requirements will need to be changed.
