Is it OK to follow a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?

I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian. But i plan to have kids in the future so would it be OK to stay on a vegetarian diet during pregnancy. Is it OK to follow a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?
Definately, in fact it would benefit both you and the baby. Eating meat is not necessary as long as you recieve enough protein and vitamins, such as B12, from other foods. Non-meat sources of protein are usually much healthier than meat, such as dried beans, soy products, dairy, eggs, and nuts. Some vegetarians eat fish, which would be a consideration for you. You will just have to make sure you are eating about 75 grams of protein a day. It can be challenging, but it is definately possible. Make sure to check out the library or a book store, they have lots of books on vegetarian pregnancies. You will not regret becoming vegetarian, your body will thank you.

I just read the answer from Panacea, and I definately DISAGREE with him. First of all, a 'true' vegetarian can eat eggs and dairy, it is a Vegan which does not. I would not suggest a Vegan diet, it would be very difficult. But a vegetarian is usually a vegetarian because they are health concise, meaning they would not typically substitute healty foods for potato chips. Also, I know so many people who are vegetarians who are very healthy and well, much healthier than non-vegetarians. Unless you eat organic meat, meat contains hormones and pesticides and all kinds of harmful things. You just have to weigh your options. With all the vegetarian options in the stores now, it is much easier to eat enough protein. Morning Star Farms and Boca products are easily available and affordable vegetarian products, they also are tasty and low in fat and calories and high in protein.
=) i've been a vegetarian for awhile now, and found out yesterday that i was pregnant. everyone has been telling me that i have to start eating meat, but im glad that someone other than me realizes that there are healthier sources of protein!

Yes, it is. Just make sure you are getting enough protein, sometimes lacking in a vegetarian diet. If you eat eggs and milk, this is good as you can derive your protein from these sources. You might even start craving meat!
Where's the Hindu population on Yahoo! Answers when they're needed?

Yes, it's fine.

"Vegetarian diets, based on nutritious whole foods are healthful choices for pregnant women."

Etc, etc. Search for "vegetarian pregnancy." NO reputable source will tell you it's a bad idea. At all. I've never eaten meat, I'm pregnant, and nobody even raises an eyebrow. And, if there was something wrong with not eating meat while pregnant, I'd have problems myself given where I came from.

I think the 'no' answer you got is from somebody who (a) has confused 'vegetarian' with 'vegan,' and (b) has a chip on their shoulder. It's pretty much rubbish.

There're loads of web sites, and even books, about being vegetarian and pregnant. In brief: just eat a balanced diet (which is entirely possible, and not hard at all) of healthy foods, and you have nothing to worry about. Choke down a pre-natal vitamin as well.

Of some interest:

"Some studies show that vegetarian women are much more likely to have female babies. A study of 6,000 pregnant women in 1998 "found that while the national average in Britain is 106 boys born to every 100 girls, for vegetarian mothers the ratio was just 85 boys to 100 girls."[64]"

The excuse given is soy intake; there's no requirement to eat soy just because you're vegetarian, though. I can't stand the stuff, myself...Is it OK to follow a vegetarian diet during pregnancy?
Its fine as long as you are getting protein...discuss it with your Dr or a nutritionist to make sure that you are getting a complete diet.
Of course it is. You can get everything you need from a vegetarian diet if you do it correctly. Check out the Vegetarian Food Pyramid online. There are also many great articles about pregnancy and being a vegetarian all over the internet with alot of tips about what you should eat. Humans do not need meat to be healthy.
Yes it is absolutely healty. Talk with your doctor about it and truthfully, fruits and vegetables are all that you or your child require. Make sure you vary what you're eating so that you get the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
my aunt is a strict vegetarian and has had 2 children.

mention to your doctor that you are a vegetarian when you do have children he/she Will just let you know what foods to eat to make sure you and baby get all you need.
No it's not. And I will tell you why. Vegetarianism is a very poor diet with a chronic deficiency in many nutrients that you cannot live very long without. In order to work, you must follow VERY strict rules for what you cannot eat and what you MUST eat. Almost no so called "vegetarians" can be bothered to learn what they have to eat or can stomach this type of diet (in other words, they are self delusional hypocrites). Don't get me wrong. A vegetarian diet, done correctly, can be healthy. Trouble is, almost no one does it correctly. Mostly, what they do is eat vegetarian junk food and ultra-processed foods which are extremely unhealthy. This causes them to get sick. Most cheat and eat certain meat products (for example....eggs) that they arbitrarily classify as vegetarian.

Anyway. If you eat incorrectly, you will be very unhealthy. If you get pregnant, your baby will dramatically increase your need for important nutrients....ones in very short supply even if you ARE eating correctly. This will hurt your baby.

Basically, it boils down to this. You need to read several books on the biochemistry of the vegetarian diet and learn in great detail the rules you must follow in order for the diet to be safe. You need to ask yourself honestly if you are capable of doing this without cheating and eating garbage foods that just happen to be vegetarian (example....potato chips). Those foods are forbidden on a vegetarian diet because you cannot spare the lost bulk (you need to eat alot on a correctly done vegetarian diet, of very low calorie foods). If you are full on garbage, you won't eat something else you cannot survive more than a couple of days without.

If the honest answer to this is no, then skip vegetarianism altogether. If you go several years with eating correctly, then, yes, you can consider maintaining this diet when you are pregnant. If not, you better not eat that way when pregnant. You WILL hurt your baby doing that.
