Is it possible to lose weight while going on a vegetarian diet?

i wanna lose some weight fast and it would be very easy for me to not eat meat for a while considering that i don't like it. if i stopped eating meat for a month and exercised alot (like i already do), would i lose the weight fast?Is it possible to lose weight while going on a vegetarian diet?
Hmm...it's two-sided.



Lots of meats are fatty, like burgers, pork chops, etc.

But some vegetarian meals are surpringly fatty too. Tofu is pretty high in calories and vegetarian things like eggs and beans and cheese (protein substitutes) are high in fat.



My suggestion: eat lean meat like chicken and turkey. And lots of vegetables. Just stay away from pork and beef!Is it possible to lose weight while going on a vegetarian diet?

There are fat vegetarians too... the people who do sedentary work and take rich food... because the veg foods are also often as nutritious as non veg stuff...



The play of genetics descended from parents could also be there... but you can definitely reduce weight by a PLANNED food regimen... normally more salads (raw vegetables, fruits) in diet could do a lot good..



There are things like "fruit fasting" and the naturopath recommends a particular fruit or combination of fruits to be taken daily (only fruits) for a week or fortnight... and it is said to do wonders... Don't try anything yourself... if there are no qualified naturopaths just include more salads in your diet and avoid hot, spicy, tinned stuff in general...



Plus proper exercises (there are specific exercises for burning excess fat) and a yoga teacher could help excellently.... or if there is no yoga institute nearby, take morning walks (steady, brisk walk swinging your arms rhythmically) that helps you to take deep breaths...

please understand that you can't just stop eating meat. some vegetables may have a bit of protein but no vegetable has a complete protein. And you HAVE to have complete protein.



For one thing you have what is called the intrinsic factor. It is th factor that allows your body to utilize B12 in meat. If you do not eat meat, chicken and fish do not count, your body can and will stop producing th intrinsic factor . Once it stops producing it you can not make it start again. And you will have to take vitamin b12 shots the rest of your life



The absorption of dietary vitamin B12 occurs in the small intestine and requires a secretion from the stomach known as intrinsic factor. If intrinsic factor is deficient, absorption of vitamin B12 is severely diminished. Vitamin B12 deficiency impairs the body鈥檚 ability to make blood, accelerates blood cell destruction, and damages the nervous system. The result is pernicious anemia (PA). In the classical definition, PA refers only to B12 deficiency anemia caused by a lack of intrinsic factor life.

Why have I been feeling agitated ever since I started vegetarian diet?

Vegetarian diets do that to you. Partially it's caused by the lack of vitamin B12 and protein in the diet. It affects the mood and brain function. That's one reason why so many vegetarians and vegans are so rude/arrogant and insist on pushing their diets and beliefs onto other people.Why have I been feeling agitated ever since I started vegetarian diet?
There is no scientific or medical reason why lack of meat would make you feel agitated. Had you provided more information such as what kind of vegetarian diet you are following, for how long and what you eat as well as possibly some medical history then I might be able to begin to answer the question. Is it possible that seeing people eat meat around you is the source of that agitation? Have you not been getting enough sleep?

If it's a serious problem see a professional. If you think it's vegetarianism that makes you feel weird see if you can get a nutritionist to explain why.
You're probably just hungry. I get agitated when I'm hungry as well. Most vegetarians don't intake enough protein to really keep them full. There are things you can eat, such as beans, etc, that will help make you fill more full.Why have I been feeling agitated ever since I started vegetarian diet?

    i think that if you want to change your diet don't change it by becoming a vergertarian its bad for you you're going too be missing out on things like rice and wheat and things like that you don't need too become a vegetarian to loose weight you can do different things and eat differently but not by changing your food and what you eat its very unhealthy to do so you can be happy another way i think changing your diet by becoming a vegetarian is very bad for your health.its doesn't make a better world at all just for that.

    Yes. Whole grains are an incomplete source of protein--they lack one of the essential amino acids (EAA), methionine. Legumes have the needed methionine, but in turn they lack the essential amino acid, lysine, which whole grains have in abundance. If the kid only eats whole grains as his source of proteins, he will put himself into amino acid imbalance. And vice versa if the kid only eats legumes but refuses to eat grains. Since protein synthesis requires adequate amounts of ALL the amino acids in the overall amino acid pool, an imbalance in EAA intake will essentially shut down protein synthesis. And since protein is constantly breaking down, there will not be synthesis of new protein to replace that which is lost through normal wear and tear.

    Someone on such a restricted diet will probably not be getting enough protein, and will definitely not be getting *complete* protein.     Also, there are some vitamins that are most typically found in meat, though at least some of them can be readily obtained from certain yeast-based products such as Vegemite.

    You can drink if your a vegetarian, and your body will not notice a difference between being a meat eater or a vegetarian. Getting drunk will still kill 10,000 bain cells. Poor brain cells :-)



    BTW: I can drink my meat eating friends under the table, my liver doesn't have meat to deal with, so it goes right to work ridding my body of alcohol.

    If you're considering changing you're diet, you may wish to do it slowly, just in case. Some people's bodies really just can't handle not eating meat. I've had family members who've tried to become vegetarian and their doctors told them to stop because they were getting too weak. Personally, I much prefer not eating meat. I feel much cleaner and healthier. I also drink alcohol without any problem, just remember to not over do it, regardless of your diet. It's very important to make sure that you have alternative ways of getting enough protein, b12 and iron, or else you could get sick.

    NO DIET IS HEALTHIER....if you eat meat and veg but pig out on junk food its not healthy......if you eat veggies and pig out on junk food its not healthy.....if you eat a well balanced veggie diet it is healthy.....if you eat a well balanced diet of meat and veg then it is healthy.....for example i eat lean organic meats...plenty of fruit and veg...exercise 4 times a week and im in perfect health.....SO it doesnt matter what diet you choose aslong as you dont consume too much fat or sugar and you do plenty of exercise.

    I was on a more or less meaty/eggy/dairy diet all my life and right now I am dying from Lupus (the autoimmune rheumatic disease). I have tried ALL possible lifestyles to cure my disease, medicaments do not help, Ajurveda does not help, yogurt-diet NO, organic food with lean meat and fish NO, Mediterranean diet (lots of fish) NO, all vegetarian with eggs and milk NO. I get sick this instant after meat, you could put me in a reality show for a laugh, because my face gets all red, but I mean REALLY red, not like flushing, it is like my blood cells would burst any moment and I get rashes all over my face.

    I am so mad about those silly "meat is healthy" guys. I am almost dead! And my face does NOT get full of rashes if I eat vegetables! I am sure about it, since I can watch my body break down after any animal products, while I feel ok or even better eating vegetables and fruits. It's a plain fact.

    Really, I never heard ANY successful healing stories of people who switched to meat and became healthier in the long run. Never!     Proteins: Body's protein needs can be provided by either animal or plant sources. Mixed protein diet obtained from various plant sources is better than animal protein and is recommended in diabetes, renal diseases and liver diseases.     Vitamins and Minerals: plant foods are rich in many vitamins and minerals.



    Vitamin D: Vitamin D is obtained by exposure of skin to sun light and this is not a problem in India.



    Calcium: The vegetarians can meet their needs for calcium from dairy products. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Dark green vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin as are legumes and whole grain cereal.



    Iron: The problem of iron deficiency is relatively common but vitamin C significantly enhances absorption of iron hence it is advisable for vegetarians to include with each meal a food high in vitamin C which as lime, citrus fruits or juices.



    Zinc: Zinc is found in large number of plant foods.



    Fiber: Fiber is found only in vegetarian food like whole grain cereals, legumes, greens, fruits, vegetable etc.



    Thus in vegetarian foods all requirement of nutrition for body growth and maintenance is fulfilled.     It really depends. There are some vegetarians that just eat a lot of junk foods, and very little fruits, veggies, and nuts, so they would not be healthier than a meat eater at all. There also people who eat meat but eat tons of junk food too...so if you want to be healthy and are willing to eat lots of fruits and veggies, it probably will be healthier to be a vegetarian, as long as you get enough protein and essential nutrients.

    No I don't. I have two ferrets, and ferrets are strict carnivores naturally. Our leopard gecko only eats crickets. And the dog eats regular dog food. I might consider switching him to a vegetarian diet, except when I need to get rid of leftovers.     You need to eat real oatmeal for breakfast daily, and cooked beans such as black beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and lima beans for your lunches and dinners. You need to eat brown rice instead of white, and you need to eat different kinds of lettuce besides iceberg in your salads.

    You need to be sure to eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily, and especially those that "come in their own wrappers".

    If you are going to start, start with the oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, and gradually begin implementing more vegetables and beans into your diet. Try a salad-bar style salad as a main lunch meal, meaning instead of just iceberg lettuce on your salad add shredded carrots, chopped cucumbers, fresh spinach, kidney beans or garbanzo beans, and fresh sugar snap peas on top. (I do - it's a meal in itself!)

    And fruit smoothies for snacks instead of sodas. Those are easy: 1 cup frozen berries (you can find them in the freezers next to the ice creams at the supermarket), 1 cup orange juice, and 1 cup yogurt blended in the blender.

    1. Get the "Whole Body" cleansing system. They are like $20 @ Walmart. It works for that. Makes you feel lighter. I love them! It's where the Slimfast, vitamins/supplements, medicines are.

    More veggies are good, but fiber is the key. Try eating 2 high-fiber (13 grams each) whole-wheat tortillas and Activia yogurt everyday.



    I had the same problem but with 30 grams of fiber and Activia I poop every morning like clockwork nice and easy.

    There are lots of good vegetarian iron sources, such as whole grain cereals and flours, leafy green vegetables, lentil and kidney beans, chick peas, spinach, baked beans, Muesli, figs and apricots. In fact, research has shown that vegetarians are no more likely to suffer from iron deficiency than non-vegetarians.
    Supplements are a good idea, regardless of whether or not you're vegetarian. You do need to be conscious of how much protein and iron you take in. legumes and dairy are not as rich in protein as meat, so you need to make sure you get enough to meet your needs. Spinach is a good source of iron, and so are raisins and dates. Still not as much as beef, but very good for you. Also make sure you eat cooked spinach, since it increases the absorbability of it. Also, cooking with cast iron cookware will increase the iron content of anything you cook. If you eat fish, fish is just as high in protein as chicken or beef, but with good-for-you omega 3's. If you don't eat fish, flax seed and olive oil are also good sources of omega 3's.     A varied vegetarian diet is the best way to go.



    Eating a mixed balance of grains and pulses (rice, lentils etc.) proteins (tofu, eggs, cheese, meat-alternative foods) and fibres (potatoes etc.) can keep you healthy pefectly fine.



    I've been vegetarian all my life, and lived a pretty healthy way. But dont be afraid to eat out. Loads of restaurants serve vegetarian meals and Burger King even has a Vegetarian Society approved bean burger.



    In regards to supplements, I do take about 8 tablets a day, but thats down to personal choice. I take Omega oils tablets (usually gained from eating oily fish, but the tablet oils are extracted from plants), iron and multi-vitamins pills and vitamin E tablets.



    You dont have to live off supplements, but they may help you from time to time.
    two main foods you can eat for protein are tofu and beans. but if your looking more for iron, then thats not AS easy. I suggest taking iron suppliments, thats what me and a few of my veggie friends do, and if your body is having trouble absorbing the iron, then either drink lots of orange juice, or take vitamin c suppliments aswell because it helps with the absorbtion of iron.

    Haven't gone totally vegatarian, but have started using a simple process of having a small bowl of raw veggies near me during the day. It helps keep hunger at bay and still gives me many of the benefits of a vegaterian diet.

    I tried it, was sent to the hospital then decided to never do it again. If you are very active you need to eat meat. I ate more than I did when I ate meat and I always ate the combination that made complete proteins but human bodies weren't meant to go all veggie. My body suffered because I tried to be a vegetarian and I would not recommend it to anyone. My ex was a vegetarian and he was always underweight and sickly looking. Now that he eats meat he has more energy and he just looks better all over. This is not a diet that people should go on unless they are allergic to meats.     you are not getting enough protein. You have to find substitutes for the protein you are taking away. I suggest rice, beans, and nuts.     One thing to look out for if you have a vegetarian or vegan diet is this, are you getting enough iron and B12? These two vitamins are essential and a deficiency in these can lead to anaemia. These days though whenever get a test my iron and B12 levels are fine. I think it鈥檚 because I eat a much healthier and more varied diet nowadays as well as popping the occassional multi vitamin.

    There's no reason why with the right exercise routine and veggie (even vegan) diet you can't build yourself up. It's not so easy as for us omnivores, but I'm sure you can do it. For a whole host of resources just feed "vegetarian" and "body-building" into any search engine. Remembering as you only want to build yourself up you don't have to go to quite the extremes you'll see on those sites...

    get yourself some whey protein - the weight gain formula. eggs have tons of protein, particularly egg whites. lift weights - build your strength platform first doing about 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps per exercise. focus on compound movement exercises such as bench pressing, squats, deadlifts and pull ups. you can also add a biceps and triceps exercise such as curls and dips. in a few months you can branch out to add more exercises to your routine, cut the reps down to 6-8 and increase the weights. sets at 3-4. don't train too much but train HARD. keep cardio to a minimum. eat enough calories to support your activity and then some, particularly if you have a fast metabolism. it is important to have protein after training. get enough rest.

    1. being vegetarian doesn't mean not eating well! Get a good vegetarian cook book!



    2. A good substitute for meat is beans and rice together. They serve as a whole protein.





    Try one recipe a week. My suggestion is just to try one new vegetarian recipe a week. If you like it, add it to your collection of staple recipes that you eat on a regular basis. If the recipe isn鈥檛 that great, try another next week. Soon, you鈥檒l have a good list of 5-10 great recipes that you love to cook and eat. And really, whether you鈥檙e vegetarian or meat eater, that鈥檚 probably all you really eat on a regular basis anyway (for dinner, at least). Most people only have 7-10 recipes that they cook regularly. Once you have that many vegetarian recipes, you are good to go.

    Substitutions. Also try your regular recipes that you love, but instead of using meat, use a meatless substitute. So if you love to eat spaghetti or chili, for example, substitute a ground-beef alternative from Bocca or Morning Star and just cook it the way you normally would. There are alternatives for just about any kind of meat, and some of them are quite good. You can go on eating what you normally eat, but meatless.

    Tell friends %26amp; family. If you鈥檙e really going to become a vegetarian, you鈥檒l have to talk to the people you know and love about it.     Vegetarian restaurants. There鈥檚 only one vegetarian restaurant on Guam, and unfortunately it鈥檚 closed on nights and weekends (it鈥檚 a Seventh-Day Adventist joint, open for lunch on weekdays, and it鈥檚 great). But you might live in an area with dozens of great vegetarian restaurants. Give them a try! You might discover some wonderful food, and thank your lucky stars you decided to give vegetarianism a try. Otherwise, most restaurants will have some vegetarian options, or can cook you a vegetarian dish on request.

    Vegetarian convenience foods. In your supermarket鈥檚 frozen section, you鈥檒l probably find a lot of vegetarian foods that can be microwaved. You might give some of these a try (I love the Amy鈥檚 brand). Beware that, like most convenience foods, these are more expensive than home-cooked stuff, and most likely not as healthy. But you can find some fairly healthy foods there too. At any rate, it鈥檚 always good to have a couple of convenience foods in the freezer, just in case.
    Easy: eat fruits, vegetables, dark leafy greens, intact whole grains, and legumes. Dairy and eggs are not healthy. Anything out of a box/package/can is probably not healthy (there are some exceptions).     For protein: seitan, tempeh and tofu (I dont recommend tofu as much since it has the lowest protein) and as for seitan add nutritional yeast if you are vegan or strict vegetarian. Seitan is what i recommend the most since it is the tastiest but that is if you can eat gluten.



    For iron and calcium: leafy green vegetables, nuts, beans and legumes. though your body aborbs iron more easily.

    In all reality, it's a proven fact that a vegetarian diet is healthier than a meat eating one if done correctly. My two children are both being raised vegetarian until they can make an educated decision for themselves. They are both very healthy and our pediatrician more than approves:-)

    If you do it correctly, it can be. A child needs a high caloric diet. This can easily be replicated with vegetables and nuts high in fat. Avocados are very high in calories, and they are very good for you.

    B12 has been mentioned alot. But to be sure take a multi-vit, prenatal even if you're not pregnant. Also, for calcium, take a good quality supplement that contains vitamin D and magnesium.

    Typical vegetarian diet may lack in Omega 3 mineral which comes from fish. However, some vegetables may include this mineral (not sure which).

    B12 is something you would normally get from meat - vegs normally would get a non-animal version of this as a supplement vitamin. I think it actually comes from soil, but don't quote me on it. You might need to google it on some health sites.





    Umm... important things that some people don't think about when they turn veg are iron %26amp; protein. You can get iron from dark green veg (peas, broccoli, spinach) and from mushrooms. You can get protein from nuts, lentils, beans %26amp; other legumes as well as tofu. The reason I mention this stuf is because some people are really fussy eaters and if this stuff isn't included in their veg diet, they'll get sick!

    Too much info to list it all here... but there's a GREAT vegetarian nutrition book called, "The vegetarian Way" by Virgina Messina, MPH, RD and Mark Messina, PhD. As you can tell, these are doctors and registered dieticians who did ALOT of research on the subject (yet the book is an easy read.)



    Next is to learn how to cook vegetarian. My favorite cookbook, because it's super easy, with just alittle ingrediants and shows you how to make "mock meats" is "Authenic Chinese Cuisine" by Bryanna Clark Grogan.



    There are free cooking videos on the internet by PostPunk Kitchen. It's put on by british punk girls and is super easy to follow.

    I've always loved turkey. Other meats, I don't care so much for. After two years, I still struggle with avoiding the turkey at the family diners during holiday season.     I remember,when I first went vegetarian,about 18 years ago,it was a little bit hard having Thanksgiving dinner with out the turkey. I think that this is natural. We're giving up all we've been taught since we first started eating solid foods. It is a little difficult for awhile. Another thing that's also a hard,are your first BBQ's,when everyone is eating BBQ'd chicken,burgers,hot dogs,etc.

    It does get easier,I promise. I've been vegetarian for over 18 years,as I said, and a vegan for the last 6. I have learned how to have gorgeous Thanksgiving,BBQ's,Christmas,birthday,et鈥?meals. The biggest tip I can give you on how to get through these meals sane,full and happy is to take control of things for yourself. Never,and I mean NEVER expect someone else to think about you and your diet for you. You have to plan everything for yourself. Figure out what you will want to eat and make it.

    I have been living in Denmark the last 2 years,and I'm still a vegan. I have learned, even more so,not to expect people to cook for me,unless they invite me over for a quiet dinner,just my husband and me,and even then,I still can't expect anything. People here don't always know what a vegetarian diet is,or what they can make,let alone for a vegan.I have had to bring anything from my own birthday cake to a tofu quiche for an extended family Christmas gathering. Or,you can go to Google.com and type in "vegetarian Thanksgiving recipes" and you will have lots and lots to choose from. Make as much food as you're capable of-me,I've been known to bring no less than 6 dishes to a potluck,but that's not necessary.

    At least,since you're vegetarian,you can still eat the mashed potatoes they have there and the pumpkin pie,etc,with out worrying about making your own.

    Get creative,have fun with it,and think about it as you're starting your own traditions. Make food that's so good,everyone else is going to want some,too. I've made a tofu roast that's so good my in-laws have seconds every year-and they had never had tofu before I moved here.

    Be passionate about your beliefs(with out preaching or making people uncomfortable),be passionate about your lifestyle and you'll be surprised at what can happen. I've turned people I never expected on to vegan food.



    Also,ignore the others when they wave a turkey leg in your face and make comments on how good it is,even though the urge to shove it where the sun don't shine takes you over.     I cook something special. That way, it is still a food event to look forward to, but it's not focused on the meat I'm not going to eat. I love anything with pumpkin in it, so I think this year I'm going to make something like Mexican Pumpkin Lasagna or something.     I don't bother fighting it, I follow the Buddha's philosophy on vegetarianism which allows meat-eating at feasts. However, I do try to reduce my intake; I can't see any reason other than obstinance to kill yourself over the holidays for this. You maintain the health benefits of vegetarianism even if you cheat a few times a year, and, well, the animal's already dead. -Importantly- your eating it in a feast situation is not likely to cause the death of more animals.



    Hmm, a thought to counteract the dead animals: ask your friends and family members to try to substitute fake meat in what dishes it goes well. In my family, stuffed pasta is made with texturized vegetable protein (instead of ground meat) for everyone, not just the vegetarians among us. We all eat it, we all love it, and nothing died!



    And yes, I know the Naziterians are going to rip me to shreds for this blasphemy ;)

    Why deny yourself. I certainly will not think less of you if you partake of turkey twice a year.
    No. I plan an alternative main dish for myself which is also festive. For example over the thanksgiving weekend I had a Stuffed Pumpkin instead of Turkey. I'm not sure what I'll do for xmas yet, probably something with apples and cranberries.



    If you are eating with family bring extra of your dish to share with everyone. Also ensure whatever sides are cooked aren't in butter or include animal products. My mom doesn't mind ensuring the sides are vegan :-)
    I did, but I successfully broke my food addictions. Some people recommend going 'cold turkey' :) , but I prefer a slightly less severe approach. You need to understand that foods are addictive as described by Dr. Neal Barnard.



    I now recognize that I'm mostly vegan and consciously eat very little animal protein products. I do give myself permission to eat bad food at any time, but I also recognize that I will eat this bad food in very small quantities and on very rare occasions like Thanksgiving. That can be very difficult. It's like a smoker who only smokes one cigarette/ two cigarettes per day. You are teasing yourself if you do it daily. Give yourself permission to eat bad food anytime, but stop yourself most of the time. This will be positive reinforcement. Never have a hard rule, because that will inevitably lead to failure.



    I'll sample all the courses in when I am invited to a dinner party, but I eat almost all vegetables. I sometimes go a month without eating any animal protein and I now lack the cravings for cheese and meat that I had before.

    It is very easy, just make sure you are getting enough Iron, B12, and Protein. If you are still eating eggs and milk it shouldn't be that difficult. First, start with a multivitamin. Find meat replacements like avocado, I used that in salads and sandwiches. Try veggie burgers. Eat lots of beans in salads, burritos, and whatever.     Horselover had a very good point. I stopped eating meat(not fish) about 12 yrs ago and it's taken me years to figure out how to give my body enough protein. Pasta and breads are great big temptations for me, but I try to eat them moderately. Lots of veggies, fruit, and nuts.
