Is it healthy for my dog to be on a vegetarian diet?

i recently got a dog-shes a long-haired chihuahua about 1 year old. i am a vegetarian and strongly believe in it, but is it good for my pup?Is it healthy for my dog to be on a vegetarian diet?
no, dogs are carnivores and need a large amount of animal protein in their diets. believe me i know a lot of vets and vet students who are vegetarians/vegans and they wish they could feed their pets the same way but it is not possible, sorry :)

if you were thinking about a homemade/raw diet you would have to deal with buying and handling raw meat which may not be within your list of things you are willing to do considering your personal choices
why 14 points down. that is rude

Is it healthy for my dog to be on a vegetarian diet?
NO.

Dogs need high consentrations of animal protein.

Soy and other plant based proteins just won't do. (Well, not entirely) Some dogs are highly allergic to soy, and a dog can't digest it like people can.

I do believe dogs are omnivores, but they MUST have meat.
No, dogs are OMNIVORES/CARNIVORES (some conjecture over this). They need meat in their diets in order to be healthy. If you want a pet that is a vegetarian, get a rabbit. Is it healthy for my dog to be on a vegetarian diet?
NO. not really everyone needs meat. my dog loves his meat and his vet says meat is really good for dogs. a vegetarian diet FOR A DOG!? not good. my friends dog died without meat :( poor rory. so meat + dog = healthy lving stile for doggy!

:) hope i was helpful!
It is sooo unhealthy for a dog to eat nothing but veggies. They need to eat meat. It can cause major PH level changes in their bodies and it can eventually make them sick. Keep in mind dogs are carnivoires not like us omnivoires. They should really be eating meat. Soy and other plant based proteins just won't do. (Well, not entirely) Some dogs are highly allergic to soy, and a dog can't digest it like people can. And yes there are some all vegie dry dog foods but I was told it is not healthy for them and the dog can have stomach problems. If you wish to be a vegetarian so be it. It should not be imposed upon your dog though. For the sake of your dog, keep him on a meat diet...but if you must, http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ gives you tips on how to do it right.

Hope i helped.
No it really isn't. While dogs are omnivores and can survive on a vegetairian diet, they will not thrive on one. You need to know that there can be light years between thrive and survive.
No, dogs NEED meat. Discuss this with your veterinarian please.
Dogs are omnivores by nature and will eat vegetables however they do not constitute a well rounded diet for a dog. Beans, eggs, nuts and soy do not constitute good protein options for your pet. It is your personal choice to not eat meat but your dog needs it!!! Please do some reading on prey model diet....learn what she needs and not what you want to feed her...
No. Dogs are carnivores and need meat.
I would not recommend a vegetarian diet unless your dog specifically has issues with protein. Since dogs eat primarily meat, taking it away leaves them without many of the nutrients that they need. Meat isn't just about protein, there are many vitamins and minerals that come from the eating of flesh that are important. Most vegetarians I know either have to sacrifice some of their principles to eat fish, or suffer from anemia and other illnesses due to lack of nutrients from eating meat.

Don't do that to your dog. She was meant to eat meat. It's the only way she will truly be healthy.
yes its fine. I have a friend in India who also believes in what you do for his pets.

he feeds them hard boiled eggs
As long as they're getting all their nutritional needs met...same with you. ;) They really are meant to eat meat though....that's why they have the point teeth.
