I've been a vegetarian for a week now and i've become very sick, i have some food poisoning symptoms, being sick, stomach pains etc. I'm sure it'll pass and i'm not going to give in and eat meat. I was just wondering if this is common? I used to eat unbelieveable amounts of bacon before so i suppose it would be a shock to my body to no longer have any. THANKS!Have other people become sick when transitioning to a vegetarian diet?
as with any new diet you need to realize that dramatic changes to your body will affect it! you stopped eating protein from meat so are you actually getting enough from tofu and or other sources? I was a lacto ovo veg as was my son the change in diet was difficult.YOur body needs time. Make sure you talk to dr ! Take multi vitamins! Your body is going through withdrawals... go to any vegan website it will list food alternatives for you! especially if you are a teen and havent finished growing you might eliminate the wrong foods from your diet and not replace the nutrients you still need!
i doubt it's because you're vegetarian.
most eat processed foods and nothing else thinking that's vegetarianism.
no, it doesn't work like that, it's in your mind.....
besides as usual one isn't telling us what they are actually eating again.
most comes from not eating fresh whole fruits and veggies...
no, eating 'vegetarian foods' such as morningstar, boca, garden burger and processed foods that one assumes is vegetarian aren't foods to begin with.
eat better to begin with...
and i doubt you're not eating meat.. all processed foods have meat product in them.Have other people become sick when transitioning to a vegetarian diet?
Are you eating a lot of soy?
I have a mild soy allergy, and it gives me stomach cramps sometimes if I do eat it.
Try cutting out soy, its a very common allergen.
Are you SERIOUS?
Soy is one of the 7 most common food allergens!
I have a soy allergy. I know severel people with doctor-comfirmed soy ALLERGIES. It's extremely common.
I'm not saying soy is bad for you. If you don't have an allergy, it can be great. But if you're getting stomach cramps, or hives from it, maybe its a good idea to try cutting it out. Jesus Christ. I don't think thats a misguided piece of advice.
People with less severe allergies, like I have myself, oftentimes aren't bothered by it in small quanities, like the kinds that come in a lot of processed foods. Thats why I didn't know about it until I went vegetarian.
I found that during the first week after transitioning to a vegetarian diet, I was slightly more flatulent (and had mild stomach pain) from my suddenly higher fiber intake; my body got used to it after that first week and a half, though.
As you mentioned, getting rid of a certain dietary staple will be quite a shock to your system; just wait it out. The human body is a very adaptable thing.Have other people become sick when transitioning to a vegetarian diet?
I'd second the fiber aspect - when I eat shittily for a few weeks, then go back to my usual vegetarian diet (plenty of veg and legumes), I get stomach cramps and sometimes diarrhea. BUT... I feel WAY better after a week or two.
It might also be that you have a food intolerance, so be careful to note whether you get sick after eating certain types of foods.
I'm in the same boat! I went vegetarian last Thursday. It's been pretty hard for me because whenever I see hamburgers or even orange chicken commercials, I want to eat it so bad. But I've gotten through the toughest part. So far, I haven't seen any illnesses crop up with me, but I'm 99% sure it's the switch to a new diet. It's probably just withdrawal -- sort of like if you were a heavy smoker and then you decided to quit one day. It'd be hell, wouldn't it? My advice? Just wait it out, your body will adjust to this healthier lifestyle.
I was vegetarian for most of my life. I stopped due to pregnancies. I still stay away from meat as much as possible but have had that sick felling of going back to vegetarian. Your body's detoxing, from all the preservatives, etc. Just hang in there, if it gets really bad go to a local health food store and try jerky. Just a little bit helps and goes a long way.
I consumed far more animal products than, well, most people. I went vegan overnight and had no troubles whatsoever. If you did get actual food poisoning, then being a vegetarian has nothing to do with it...lack of proper food preparation is the culprit.
its your body readjusting to a new diet instead of going "cold Turkey" if you pardon the pun try eating a small amount of meat and try to wean yourself of of it
there is 526 causes of nausea and stomach pain. if its is the food then wash your veggies and cook them well.
