I have been Vegan since Xmas. I want to lose a few pounds. If I cut calories would I lose weight faster than a non vegetarian?Would a reduced calorie vegetarian diet promote faster weight loss than a 'regular' diet?
Not necessarily. If you're eating a well balanced meal that is low in the unhealthy fats and low in processed and refined sugars and carbs, you will lose the same amount of weight. You need to eat a balanced meal with a calorie deficit high enough to lose weight and you will need a good exercise routine.



I would say both diets offer pros and cons, but it's all about how you balance your meals, how much you eat and they types of things you're eating.

any caloric restriction will cause weight loss because you eat less than the base load energy required for your normal metabolic processes. However this can be very unhealthy and is probably harder on a vegetarian diet because plant foods contain our major energy source- carbohydrates. That said the other extreme is the Atkins diet which is just as bad because it cuts out all carbs but we need them to live. So balance is the key. If you cut the calories you will lose weight provided your intake does not exceed your energy expenditure, the best option is to increase exercise and decrease caloric intake for a week or so and see how you go. But you should ask a doctor if this is a good idea, just in case.

I'm a vegan, and I am losing weight. But I'm not as restricted as when I was an omni and lost a lot of weight fast. So it all depends on caloric restriction. I do recommend to lose slowly, because I have lost so much weight in the past, but only to binge it back and some more. Now I'm a vegan, but I'm not avoiding healthy fats and things like that. I am losing weight slowly, but I don't have crazy binges and can see myself eating like this for a long time.



So when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter whether you're a veggie, you will lose weight. But listen to me when I say to lose weight slowly. Don't be too restrictive. And exercise!

Yes, I think so. Personally, I think saving animals and caring about them more than your cravings would be a better motive than shedding a few pounds, but that's just me:)



P.S: You're more likely to go back to an omnivore's diet if your motives aren't from the heart
You can diet without actually eating any less. to obtain fast weight loss and stay permanently slim you can eat more healthy foods to increase your metabolism.
If you are consuming less calories, possibly but that really has nothing to do with being a vegetarian/vegan. Consult your nutritionist if you would like to loose weight healthfully.
