I want to start a vegetarian diet what should it be?

I want to be a vegetarian, Lacto-ovo. I have read other message boards but can't seem to find what I am looking for. I would like to know what a vegetarian would eat on a day-to-day basis.|||Lacto-ovo vegetarians replace meat with: eggs, dairy, beans, peas, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Get a couple vegetarian cookbooks and

the Vegetarian Starter Kit from -

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/|||best vegetarian drink is V-8|||My friends a vegetarian. She eats veggi-burgers and salads. Also fruits.|||If you are lacto ovo, your choices for protein is good as you've cheese, milk and eggs. You can eat fresh salads with tofu, cooked vegetables with potatoes, pasta salad, bean salad and the possibilities are endless because there are so many cooking styles. Remember to balance your meal with carbs like rice, bread or potatoes too.|||Ignore the fake scolar troll, I know he will copy and paste the SAME answer that he always does.

hhhmmmm

Breakfast:

2 home made muffins(make them the day before and save them, they can last a week, make sure you make them with real fruit and whole wheat flour. heres a good recipe! http://www.recipezaar.com/Vegan-Blueberr鈥?/a> use whole wheat flour instead of flour.)

Bannana

Orange juice or milk.

Lunch:

1 or 2 hummus wraps on pita bread. Homemade hummus is always the best!http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Easy-Roaste鈥?/a>

carrot sticks with peanut butter

Fruit smoothie. Put 2 teaspoons of ground flax seeds in it because they are very good for you! You will not be able to taste it at all! Just pick fruits you like to make a smoothie with!

Dinner:

Whole grain italian breat with garlic rubben on drizzled with olive oil

Salad with sunflower seed dressing

Snacks:

Toasted pumpkin seeds

Bagle wiht fruit preserves of your choice on them.

Good luck being vegetarian! You can find a lot of good cook books for vegetarians at most bookstores!

Edit:nvm about the troll, he did not post!|||Okay your best bet would be to buy organic foods. They contain HIGH amounts of protein to make up for the lost. Okay I tried tofu and oh my god it was disgusting! Don't buy it! Here is what I (4 month Lacto-Vegetarian) eat on a day to day basis:

JUST SO YOU KNOW:

I am a big food eater and I try and test everything. Things that I list I have ate and would feel to my kids and consider it to be delicious. I have also ate some bad things, hence tofu. I would not lie about it.

-Cheese Pizza

I would love to know how your diet is going and what you are choosing to do. Remember a vegetarian diet reverses heart disease and make you live 6-10 years longer than meat eaters. Good Luck!

Joe

P.S. When buying organic DO NOT ever try the fake pepperonis, NONE of them are any good =[.|||I often have vegetable soup as my main course, its tasty, filling and easy to make. There are lots of great Veg. recipe books out there.|||There is a Vegan Food Pyramid which can give you an idea of basic nutritional needs for going veg. Dairy and eggs are something to consider as an add to the basic diet since many nutritional experts are beginning to realize that a healthy diet should be 90% plant-based and 10% or less animal products.

http://www.chooseveg.com/vegan-food-pyra鈥?/a>

Since protein is brought up so often (it's a "macro" nutrient along with carbs and fat which were considered all that was needed in a diet until vitamins were discovered then phytonutrients...) I'm including a few links on protein too. The truth is that even if you ate only one food you would get the needed protein if you were meeting your caloric needs because it's amino acids we need to form protein and if we eat protein in the form of meat or dairy we have to break that protein down to amino acids:

And my fave (because it helped me understand so much):

http://www.vsc.org/protein.htm

Here's some information on Iron:

http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/factsheets/鈥?/a>

While it's true that iron from animal sources is more absorbable it turns out it's too absorbable in that the body has no choice but to absorb it even if it's not needed. Too much iron can be more damaging than too little and iron pills are the number 1 cause of accidental poisoning in children while men are actually encouraged to donate blood to help lower their iron levels. Plant iron is taken up as needed rather than regardless of need. Even then animal products only provided less than a fifth of iron in a common diet.

And this site has great tables comparing nutrition of common foods both animal and plant-based:

http://ultimatenutritiontables.com/

Here is a great online Vegetarian Starter Kit (you can order a hard copy, in Spanish too):

http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/

Here is a great list (though not exhaustive) of foods a vegetarian has available to eat (the rest of the site is pretty good too):

http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/eat.html

Remember, vegan food can be eaten by anyone. Food doesn't have to have animal products in it before a vegetarian or omni can consume. I had lots of vegan food before I stopped eating meat. I just never thought of it until I stopped. So I'm including a link to the FatFree Vegan blog as she has a lot of great recipes and many under the "Ridiculously Easy" tag (the Chili Mac looks fabulous).

http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/

http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/labels/Ridi鈥?/a>

I would suggest a supplement for both Vitamin D and B12 (both come in vegetarian formulas) as even those who consume animal products do not get enough of those in big part because of the way animals are raised these days; B12 is a soil bacteria and if animals are even outside at all these days they are fed processed grains and growth promoting antibiotics which destroy the vitamin as much as washing our veggies does, and D is added as a supplement to dairy making it a food wrapped pill which is not even a vegetarian source as it mainly comes from irradiated lanolin from sheep (if you live farther north than Atlanta or wear sunscreen or spend most of your time indoors you are likely not getting enough D no matter what your diet is).

Good luck and congrats on your choice! :)|||I start the day with cereal, usually Alpen or wholewheat toast to something like that.

Then I snack on fruit, or Soya yogurts.

I recommend Quorn products, they taste ok, and ease you into vegetarianism.

You can have veggie sausages, burgers,Sausage Rolls ect.

Don't buy Lina Mc.Cartney burgers as they cook like rock cakes.

Or use Quorn mince for bolognaise, lasgne ect.

You should look up a women called Rose Elliot she is a good veggie cook, and pick up one of her books on ebay or amazon.

I also recommend Alpro Soya products their delicious.

Also make sure you get all your protein via soya products and beans, grain, pulses, and plenty of green leafy veg for your calcium.

Anyway congradulations on making the compassionate decision and going veggie!.|||The list of things you could eat on a daily basis is just about endless! Where you live will of course make a difference, but there's so much to choose from. One of the best things about becoming vegetarian (20 years ago!) was the whole array of food that it opened up to me - because I had to start cooking for myself, I realised that the 'meat and two veg' way of eating was really quite bland. I don't know what your diet is like now, but it was only after becoming vegetarian that I started exploring other ways of eating. Big burritos full of refried beans (easy from a can, look out for lard though!), cheese, onions, chilies, tomatoes and salsa are really easy and never fail to make me happy and satisfied. There are endless vegetarian pasta dishes - linguine with blue cheese, garlic and broccoli, for example, spaghetti with black beans, sour cream and garlic... You say you want to keep on eating eggs, so you have your omelettes, hardboiled eggs etc... There's a whole world of Indian cuisine that is strictly vegetarian, some of which can be challenging to make but some of which is quite simple. Please don't be scared of things like tofu - if it is cooked badly, it will of course not be any good but when done right, it can be amazing! Ramen noodles can be made really delicious by adding various vegetables and maybe an egg.

I've never gone in for 'salad' (as in a bowl of leaves) as a meal - it's just not a meal! - but if you bulk out the salad with heartier things like chopped nuts and seeds, add olives, add cheese, then they can become amazingly satisfying and delicious too.

Hope this helps a bit. Have listed a few cookbooks below which might help inspire you (but I don't mean to imply that you need to dedicate your life to cooking just to become veggie... just ideas!).|||You should stick with eating plenty of veg and try quorn and linda mccartney food...all our vegetarian ...even tesco's do a range.
